BOILER ROOM: Heatsick live // Peanut Butter Wolf 12h. Set

A lo largo de los últimos días Boiler Room nos ha traídos dos actuaciones que, por su condición de únicas, nadie debería perderse.

Sabíamos que Heatsick prácticamente producía toda su música utilizando únicamente casiotones (el muy recomendable “Deviation EP”, por ejemplo,) pero lo que nos ha dejado descolocados es que en sus directos esa sea también su única arma. En su aparición en Boiler Room, el inglés fue capaz de mantener el público en movimiento durante 45 minutos armado únicamente con un Casio MT520. Teniendo en cuenta que la mayoría de veces la discusión sobre como “deberían ser” los directos electrónicos acaban centrándose en el tipo de equipamiento que utiliza el artista en cuestión, esto es una nueva demostración de que, en realidad, lo que cuentan son las ideas y la personalidad.

Igual de impresionante es la maratoniana sesión que se marcó Peanut Butter Wolf, capo de Stones Throw, el pasado 12/ 12/ 12. Nada y nada menos que 12 horas ininterrumpidas mezclando desde el corazón de su asombrosa colección de discos. 12 horas en las que sonó absolutamente de todo y en las que, además de poner música, PBW tuvo tiempo de comer cereales, recibir a amigos y hacer bailar como un loco a Miko, el bebé de Aaron y Indra de Peaking Lights. Y, por si fuera poco, habemus tracklist de la sesión entera. Un lujo.

12”: The Stepkids – Shadows On Behalf

El imprescindible sello angelino Stones Throw nos presenta el debut discográfico de The Stepkids. Remarcamos lo de discográfico porque, en realidad, detrás del proyecto se esconden tres experimentados vocalistas y compositores que han girado con artistas de la talla de Alicia Keys, 50 Cent o Lauryn Hill. O sea que de debutantes poco (su agenda de bolos lo corrobora). En su primer maxi nos muestran su particular aproximación al funk. Su sonido es una mezcla del funk clásico con elementos del folk de los 60's, el pop psicodélico, el soul y cierto espíritu balearic. Todo ello grabado en cintas reel-to-reel, asegurando la siempre sugerente dosis extra de calidez analógica. El resultado son dos temazos que avisan que estamos tratando con maestros y que sirven de previa a su álbum de debut, del cual de momento no existen más detalles. Por cierto, el maxi viene en un bonito marbled vinyl de edición limitada por lo que se recomienda su compra inmediata.

Hay rumores que dicen que fue la fiesta del 12 cumpleaños de Peanut Butter Wolf. Sea como sea, este vídeo me parece bastante brutal. Muestra a un grupo de chavales celebrando una fiesta en un jardín en 1982, bailando al son de uno de los temazos de Haack, pionero absoluta de la música electrónica y uno de los inventores del vocoder. Niñ@s de 12 años pinchando y bailando electro-funk de ultratumba? Pero esto que es!! que diría ese.

Game & Performance

Hay canciones que me fascinan de una manera especial. Esta es una de ellas. Incluida en la imprescindible recopilación “The Minimal Wave Tapes” (Stones Throw), cada vez que la escucho me pasa lo mismo; miro al plato, alargo la mano, cojo la aguja y la tiro un poco para atrás. Una y otra vez. No sé si será por la atmósfera, calmada pero enrarecida, o por el acento francés o por lo que sea pero la cuestión es que me flipa. Mucho.

Dame Funk

Hace unos meses que he descubierto a Dam-funk. Lo decsubrí investigando sobre el catálogo de Stones Throw (sello de los grandes como de J Dilla o Madlib). Hace poco en la entrevista que publicamos de Omar S, decía que era uno de sus músicos favoritos. Dam-Funk, mantiene esa crudeza en el sonido que también caracteriza a Omar S, pero en lugar de centrarse en el techno o el house, Dam-Funk centra su musica en el sonido electro funk y boogie de los 70 y 80. Vendría a ser la version instrumental de Chromeo. La verdad es que la foto ya habla por si misma no? CHOCOLATE SEXY!!
Ha publicado dos discos en el sello mítico Stones Throw que os recomiendo muy mucho, y hace poco grabó una sesión para una radio de States con lo mejor de su cole.
